Green Grin!

smoothie smile!

A beautiful mama friend of mine (we’ll call her Mama Sadie) recently shared a fantastic way to pump up the veggies and give your kids (and self and partner…) a treat. It’s so clever and, so far, very well received in this cabin. Here’s what she writes:

Not-so-green Green smoothies

Green smoothies are all the rage right now, but my kid is much more likely to drink a red or purple smoothie than a green one, even if they taste almost identical.

  • one banana
  • 1/2 cup of chopped pineapple (I freeze some to make the smoothie cold w/out having to use ice)
  • a GENEROUS handful and a half of greens (spinach or chard work great, we have a ton of beet and turnip greens atm)
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk (or regular milk)
  • about 1 and 1/2 TBS chopped up beets
  • a little raw honey (although I did it w/out this morning and it was sweet enough)

Combine in a mixer or magic bullet and voila!! The tiny bit of beets adds some sweetness, w/out to much beetiness and most of all, makes the smoothie a beautiful purplish color which has my kid thinking it’s a real treat!! Beets are a lot cheaper than berries!!

Note from me:
We’ve been packing this with swiss chard (and beets and spinach and…), like half the blender, and it’s rad! (when out of pineapple I’ve just done ice and honey). It’s our new afternoon drink. I LOVE that Jeremiah and Jeremy are gulping down a huge serving a raw greens and totally taking it as a treat! I’ve also been adding my liquid iron supplement to mine (low iron again this pregnancy) and it’s great!

Anyways. So here’s the last thing. When kiddos drink these treats they’re bound to finish with a big mucky ‘stache. Jeremiah’s modeling his in this pic and it would be SO fun to see more! Try this veggie-packed smoothie, snap a pick of your kiddo’s colorful smile, and then post a link in the comment section sometime between now and Sunday. Fun stuff for a summer weekend! Enjoy!

What a cute messy little guy!

So today Levi turned his nose up at the smoothies 😦 so I froze it in ice cube trays for popsicles and all of a sudden he was interested! Wish my camera was charged because Both he and Nolan were adorable little messes!

Phew! Thanks 😉 (Jeremiah is currently pretending to pour stuff from the blender into his cup. It’s empty. He’s excited 😉 )
